Save Yourself was recorded during an intense period in Maui with Bob Rock immediately following the Gravity tour. My memory is a bit foggy from that time period, but a few things stand out:

Save Yourself는 Gravity 투어 이후 Maui에서 Bob Rock(프로듀서)과 함께한 기간에 녹음한 곡입니다. 그 기간에 대해선 기억이 희미하지만 그래도 몇가지는 기억나네요.

- Bob was either in the process of finishing or had just finished Metallica's St. Anger and he was enamoured with the process of recording live off the floor. This was quite a departure from the way in which we had recorded Gravity and we were ready for it as we had just come off the road and our chops were up. 

Bob은 그때 Metallica의 St.Anger를 마무리했거나 막 마무리 했을때였는데 그는 레코딩 작업을 밖에서 라이브로 하는 것에 빠져있었어요. 우리가 Gravity를 녹음했을때와는 상당히 동떨어진 일이었고, 우리는 상당히 들뜬 채로 준비되어 있었어요.

- This was early in our creative relationship with Steve and we couldn't have been more excited to start recording. 

이땐 Steve와 함께하기 시작한지 얼마 안된 때였고, 그만큼 녹음에 들떠있었죠. 

- We wanted to surprise everyone with a new record, but sometimes the best laid plans get lead astray. 

우린 새 곡으로 모두를 놀래켜주고 싶었지만 가끔은 잘 준비했던게 다 망가져버릴 때도 있는 법이죠. 

- From time to time bands disagree and fight. If these disagreements revolve around the creative process, then they are worth having.

이따금씩 우리는 의견 불일치로 싸웠어요. 이런 의견 차이가 생산적인 방향으로 진행되면 그건 충분히 가치있는 일이었죠.

- It was really hot, even for Maui. This is not a bratty comment, we were privileged to be there, I just hear it and feel it in these demos. 

Maui에 있었다곤 해도 그 열기는 정말로 뜨거웠죠. 뭐 주제넘은 소리같은게 아녜요. 우린 거기 있을 수 있어서 좋았고, 그 기분은 이 데모곡들에서 고스란히 느낄 수 있어요. 

When I listened back to Save Yourself for the first time, I was back in that room, sweating the heat, sweating the freedom of this new recording process. Knowing that we were not going to be precious with the music meant that you had better get it right the first time. I hear our excitement of playing with Steve and in a strange way, I miss that old converted garage up on the hill overlooking the Pacific.

Save Yourself를 처음으로 다시 들었을 때 난 그 방에서 열기로, 새 녹음 작업의 자유로움으로 땀을 흘리고 있었어요. 우리가 어떤 곡에 별 가치를 두지 않는다는걸 안다는 것은 애초부터 그 곡을 바로잡는게 낫다는걸 의미하죠. Steve와 함께 연주했던 때의 흥분이 느껴지고 이상하게도, 태평양이 보이던 언덕위의 그 차고가 그리워요.

아무튼 정말 오랫만에 해보는 Our Lady Peace 포스팅입니다. Transparent Humans 메일링 8호로 올해 4월 27일 배포된 곡이죠. 가장 최근에 배포된 곡은 10월 17일 12호의 Are You Sad입니다.

배포되는 곡들은 기존에 앨범으로 나온 곡의 중간단계 버전이 대부분이라 보통은 그러려니 하고 넘기는데 이곡에는 간만에 꽂혀서 꽤 오랫동안 들었습니다. 공개된 가사가 없어서 들리는대로 받아적어가며 해석해둔게 대략 5월 중순쯤인것 같은데 미루고 미루다 오늘에야 올리네요.

제가 OLP를 좋아하는 이유를 하나 더 추가해준 곡. 레인의 날카로운 가사도 나쁘진 않지만 개인적으론 이런 곡들이 참 좋단 말이죠. 늘어지는 멜로디에 달래는듯한 목소리로 전하는 세상 사는거 힘든거 알고 우리도 다 겪어봤으니까 숨 좀 돌리면서 해. 라는 격려. It's nice to meet you 부터 Please take care까지의 구절이 너무 좋습니다.

요새는 Our Lady Peace 관련해선 영 심심하군요. Won't Turn Back 싱글이 나왔을 땐 금방 새 앨범이 나오겠구나 싶었는데 그것도 아니고...
