Not Afraid

Not Afraid was conceived in a circular shaped venue in Brussels, Belgium during a soundcheck while touring for Gravity. Not sure why my brain stores pictures and information such as this, but perhaps because it was my first ever experience (I believe) of writing with OLP. I think that the excitement and novelty of the time for both OLP and myself is apparent in the track. It was new experiences for both of us, and we were pumped (still are!).

Not Afraid는 벨기에 브뤼셀의 원형 이벤트장에서 Gravity 투어를 위한 사운드체크 도중 떠오른 곡입니다. 내가 왜 이걸 기억하고 있는지는 모르겠지만, 아마도 이게 OLP에서 처음으로 곡을 쓴 경험이기 때문이었을거에요. 이 곡에는 그때 나를 포함한 OLP가 느낀 짜릿함과 새로움이 녹아있어요. 그건 모두에게 새로운 경험이었고, 그래서 (지금도 그렇지만) 무척 들떠있었죠.

Admittedly, this song has been a contested one in our camp. While at first I would say we were all equally excited about it, as we worked in the studio, the desire to make it “even better” caused frustration. I think that Bob Rock thought we had something really special with it and was pushing us to take it someplace even higher, and somewhere along the way something was lost. It happens. Such is life, such is the process of making a record. What you are hearing here is the original version that we cut at Bob’s studio on Maui, in an infant state of production. The band agreed that this, instead of the later, more finished version, was the one that we’d rather share with you--rough, bare, unfinished edges and all.

이 곡에 대해 우리 캠프에서 여러모로 다툼이 있었다는거 인정해요. 처음엔 우리 모두 똑같이 들떠있었지만, 스튜디오에서 작업을 하면서 곡을 "더 멋지게 만들고 싶다"는 생각때문에 힘들었죠. 내 생각에 Bob Rock(프로듀서)은 우리가 이 곡을 더 특별하게 만들 수 있을거라 생각했던 것 같고, 그래서 우릴 더욱 떠밀었지만, 그러다가 중간에 놓아버리고 말았죠. 흔한 일이에요. 삶에 있어서도, 녹음을 하면서도 말이죠. 지금 여러분이 듣고 있는건 Maui에 있던 Bob의 스튜디오에서 작업한 초기판이죠. 우린 나중에 작업한 더 완성된 버전보다도 조금 더 거칠고 투박하고 덜 완성된 느낌의 이 버전을 여러분과 나누고 싶다고 모두 동의했어요.

On a technical note, it’s an interesting musical phrase because the opening guitar lick is very much based on one chord, but when the bass enters it plays a different note than that chord. In layman’s terms, it’s kind of musically “wrong”, and that’s why it’s compelling, at least to me.

음악적인 면에서 이 곡이 재밌는 점은 첫 부분의 기타 연주는 하나의 화음(chord)을 기본으로 하지만 베이스가 들어가면서 그게 어그러진다는 거죠. 쉽게 말하자면 음악적으로는 뭔가 "잘못된" 느낌인데, 적어도 내겐 그게 이 곡이 흥미로운 이유에요.

We were so excited initially by Not Afraid that we decided to perform it, instead of “Innocent”, live at the Juno awards one year. The only problem was that the only ones who knew we weren’t playing Innocent come showtime were us. We haven’t been invited to perform on the Junos since. I’m not sure if that is why. Possibly. 

예전에 Juno 시상식에서 라이브를 하기로 했을때 우린 "Innocent" 대신 이 곡을 공연하기로 해서 무지 들떴어요. 근데 문제는 우리가 Innocent를 공연하지 않을거라는걸 안 사람은 우리 뿐이었다는거죠. 그때 이후로 우린 Juno 공연을 초청받은 적이 없어요. 이게 그일때문인지는 모르겠는데, 가능성은 있겠죠.

OLP는 지금 새 앨범 Transparent Humans를 작업중입니다.

아마도 싱글까지 나온 Won't Turn Back이 거기 들어갈테고, 그 외에도 실제로 앨범에 들어갈진 모르겠지만 새 앨범과 연계해서 공홈에서 신청받는 메일링으로 미발표곡들을 전달하고 있는데, 지금까지 두 곡이 전달되었습니다.

그냥 쭉 지켜보고있다가 나중에 앨범 발매 후 보면서 포스팅하려고 했는데, 익숙한 곡이 하나 나와서 먼저 한 번 소개해봅니다.

Not Afraid는 이전에도 한번 소개한 적이 있는 곡인데, 꽤나 여러번 수정을 거친데다 곡 자체도 괜찮은데도 정식 앨범엔 포함되지 않고 맥주 회사의 부록 음반으로나 나왔다는게 특이한 곡이었죠.

그땐 Healthy in Paranoid Times 작업 중 잘린 곡이라고 봤는데, 이번 소개된 사연을 보면 Gravity 공연 중 떠올라서 작업하다 버려진 곡이라니 맞는 것 같네요.

이전 소개했을 때도 최종 버전을 포함해서 세 가지 버전을 업로드했는데, 첫 스튜디오 작업판이라는 이 버전은 세번째 영상의 라이브와 가장 가까워보입니다. 2절부턴 조금 달라지긴 하지만 1절은 아예 똑같고요.

곡 마지막 후렴구나 후렴구 들어가기 전 부분은 라이브라 실수도 나오고 오버하는건줄 알았는데 애초에 원판부터가 이랬군요.

하여튼 곡 자체도 좋지만 그 곡 하나가 계속에서 바뀌어가는 과정을 보는게 참 재밌네요.
